Local guide
Alberta sits on the busiest east-west lanes in Western Canada. Calgary and Edmonton are three hours apart on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, both are regular stops for carriers running between Ontario and British Columbia, and the oil sands keep trucks moving north to Fort McMurray. Cars shipped into Alberta need an out-of-province inspection before they can be registered.
The Queen Elizabeth II Highway links Calgary and Edmonton (about 300 km) through Red Deer, and it's one of the easiest car shipping lanes in the West. East-west carriers run the Trans-Canada through Calgary or the Yellowhead through Edmonton. Calgary to Vancouver is about 970 km through the Rockies; Calgary to Toronto is about 3,400 km and five to eight days on the truck.
Fort McMurray is about 430 km north of Edmonton on Highway 63. Carriers go there regularly, but fewer of them, so pickups and deliveries in the Wood Buffalo region may need extra lead time.
Cold snaps of −30 °C are normal in January and February. A weak battery that starts fine in Vancouver may not start in an Edmonton lot, so charge or replace it before pickup and tell the carrier if the car has a block heater. Trucks heading west into the mountains can be held up by closures at Kicking Horse or Rogers Pass.
To register a vehicle that was last registered in another province, Alberta requires an Out-of-Province Vehicle Inspection (OOPVI) at a licensed inspection facility. Registration itself is done at a private registry agent, and you'll need Alberta insurance first.
Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so buyers from other provinces often look at Calgary and Edmonton dealers. Keep in mind that your home province usually collects its own tax when you register the car there, and that the car will need your home province's inspection. Have the dealer confirm a pickup time and a loading spot for the carrier.
Shipping options
The ways cars actually move to, from and within Alberta, and when each one makes sense.
The standard way: 7–10 cars on a two-level trailer. Cheapest, and the most trucks.
In Alberta: Open carriers run the QEII and the Trans-Canada daily, so Calgary and Edmonton are easy pickups. Northern towns take longer to book.
A covered trailer that keeps out weather, salt and stones. About 50% more than open.
In Alberta: Popular for trucks and luxury cars heading through the Rockies in winter, and for collector cars.
Terminal to terminal on the national rail network. Good for long, cross-country moves.
In Alberta: Calgary and Edmonton are on the main rail lines. Rail suits long moves east to Winnipeg, Toronto or Montreal, or west to Vancouver.
One car on a flatbed or tow truck, or a professional driver. Best for short trips.
In Alberta: For Calgary–Edmonton, Calgary–Red Deer or Edmonton–Fort McMurray, a single-car flatbed or a hired driver is often quick.
By train
Canada's two national railways, CN and CPKC, carry cars between major cities. You don't book with the railway itself: a car shipping company books the space, and you drop the car off and collect it at a rail terminal or the company's lot nearby — or pay extra for a truck to cover the first and last mile. Rail usually takes longer than a truck on the same route, because cars wait at the terminal to be loaded and unloaded, so ask for the terminal-to-terminal time in writing.
| Terminal | Railway | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Calgary | CN and CPKC | Both railways run intermodal terminals in Calgary. Rail car shippers load here for Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. |
| Edmonton | CN and CPKC | Edmonton is a major CN hub. A common start and end point for rail car shipping in northern Alberta. |
Exact drop-off addresses depend on the shipping company; confirm the terminal and its hours when you book.
Cross-border
Carriers moving cars between Alberta and the United States use these crossings. A car leaving the U.S. must be reported to U.S. Customs and Border Protection at least 72 hours before export, and a U.S. car being registered in Canada goes through the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) program. Ask the carrier who files the paperwork.
Highway 4 – I-15 to Montana
The main Alberta–U.S. crossing, used on runs to Arizona, Utah and the U.S. West.

A vehicle last registered in another province needs an Out-of-Province Vehicle Inspection (OOPVI) at a licensed Alberta inspection facility before it can be registered at a registry agent.
Sometimes. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, but your home province usually charges its own tax when you register the car, and you'll pay for shipping and an inspection at home. Compare the total, not just the sticker price.

Ask for the company's full legal name and its carrier registration — a National Safety Code (NSC) number, or a CVOR certificate in Ontario — and confirm it with the provincial transport ministry. Check that cargo insurance covers your car's value, get the price and pickup window in writing, and never pay the full amount before pickup.
