Car shipping in Ontario: what to know

Ontario is Canada's biggest car shipping market. The Highway 401 corridor from Windsor through the Greater Toronto Area to the Quebec border carries more car carriers than any other road in the country, so routes from Toronto, Ottawa and southwestern Ontario are quick to book and competitively priced. Northern Ontario and the long run west to Manitoba are a different story: fewer trucks, longer waits and winter weather to plan around.

Where car carriers run in Ontario

Almost every car carrier in Ontario lives on Highway 401. Toronto to Montreal is about 540 km and usually one or two days on the truck; Toronto to Ottawa runs on the 401 and Highway 416. Ontario's assembly plants in Alliston, Cambridge, Woodstock and Windsor keep new-car haulers moving along the same roads, which is one reason trucks are easy to find between Windsor, the GTA and the Quebec border.

Going west is where Ontario gets long. Toronto to Winnipeg is about 2,100 km, much of it on Highways 11 and 17 across the north, and Toronto to Calgary is around 3,400 km. Some carriers route through the U.S. on the way west, so ask whether your car will cross the border and what paperwork that needs.

Car shipping in Ontario in winter

Southern Ontario routes run year-round with few delays, but lake-effect snow around the Snowbelt (Barrie, Owen Sound, London) and storms on Highway 17 between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay can close the road for a day or more. Build a few days of slack into any winter shipment to or from the northwest.

Road salt is heavy on every Ontario highway from December to March. If you're shipping a classic, a fresh restoration or anything you'd rather keep off salted roads, an enclosed trailer costs about half again as much but keeps the car clean.

Shipping a car to Ontario: registration and safety certificate

A car moving to Ontario from another province is registered at ServiceOntario. You'll need proof of ownership, Ontario insurance and a Safety Standards Certificate from a licensed Motor Vehicle Inspection Station. Ontario dropped Drive Clean emissions tests for passenger cars in 2022, so there's no emissions check. Book the safety inspection for the days after delivery and keep the carrier's inspection report in case there's damage to claim.

Tips for Toronto and the GTA

Full-size carriers carry up to nine or ten cars and can't get down most downtown Toronto streets or into condo garages. Expect to meet the driver at a wide street, a plaza or a big-box store parking lot. Pickups in Brampton, Mississauga and Vaughan near the 401 and 407 are usually the easiest and sometimes cheaper than downtown.

Shipping options

How to ship a car in Ontario: truck, rail and more

The ways cars actually move to, from and within Ontario, and when each one makes sense.

  • Open car carrier

The standard way: 7–10 cars on a two-level trailer. Cheapest, and the most trucks.

In Ontario: The default for almost every Ontario move. Trucks run Highway 401 daily, so pickups in the GTA, Ottawa and southwestern Ontario usually happen within a few days.

  • Enclosed trailer

A covered trailer that keeps out weather, salt and stones. About 50% more than open.

In Ontario: Worth it from December to March, when salt covers every highway, and for classics heading to shows or auctions. Enclosed carriers are based mostly around the GTA.

  • By train (rail)

Terminal to terminal on the national rail network. Good for long, cross-country moves.

In Ontario: Rail car shipping leaves from the Toronto area to Western Canada, Montreal and Halifax. It fits long moves like Toronto to Vancouver or Calgary if you can drop off and pick up at a terminal.

  • Ferry connections

Where the road ends at the water, carriers add a ferry or meet you at the terminal.

In Ontario: Manitoulin Island is reached in summer by the Chi-Cheemaun ferry from Tobermory, or year-round by the swing bridge at Little Current. Wolfe Island near Kingston has its own ferry.

  • Flatbed or driver

One car on a flatbed or tow truck, or a professional driver. Best for short trips.

In Ontario: For short moves inside Ontario — Toronto to Ottawa, London or Kingston — a single-car flatbed or a hired driver can be as quick as a carrier and costs about the same.

By train

Car shipping by rail in Ontario: terminals

Canada's two national railways, CN and CPKC, carry cars between major cities. You don't book with the railway itself: a car shipping company books the space, and you drop the car off and collect it at a rail terminal or the company's lot nearby — or pay extra for a truck to cover the first and last mile. Rail usually takes longer than a truck on the same route, because cars wait at the terminal to be loaded and unloaded, so ask for the terminal-to-terminal time in writing.

TerminalRailwayWhat to know
Brampton (Toronto area)CNCN's main Toronto-area intermodal terminal. Most rail car shippers in Ontario load here or at a partner lot nearby.
Vaughan (Toronto area)CPKCCPKC's Toronto-area intermodal terminal, used by shippers that work on the CPKC network.

Exact drop-off addresses depend on the shipping company; confirm the terminal and its hours when you book.

Cross-border

Shipping a car between Ontario and the U.S.

Carriers moving cars between Ontario and the United States use these crossings. A car leaving the U.S. must be reported to U.S. Customs and Border Protection at least 72 hours before export, and a U.S. car being registered in Canada goes through the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) program. Ask the carrier who files the paperwork.

  • Ambassador Bridge and Detroit–Windsor Tunnel

    Windsor – Detroit, Michigan

The busiest Canada–U.S. truck crossing. Most carriers going between Ontario and the U.S. Midwest or South use it.

  • Blue Water Bridge

    Sarnia – Port Huron, Michigan

A common alternative to Windsor for Highway 402 traffic.

  • Peace Bridge and Queenston–Lewiston Bridge

Fort Erie / Niagara – Buffalo, New York

The usual crossing for the U.S. Northeast and the I-95 run to Florida.

  • Thousand Islands Bridge

Lansdowne – Alexandria Bay, New York

Handy for Kingston and Eastern Ontario.

FAQ

Car shipping in Ontario: questions

Answers built from the prices, distances and companies on this page.

Do I need a safety certificate for a car shipped to Ontario?

Yes. To register a vehicle that comes from another province, ServiceOntario asks for a Safety Standards Certificate from a licensed Motor Vehicle Inspection Station, along with proof of ownership and Ontario insurance. There's no emissions test for passenger cars since 2022.

What licence does a car shipping company need in Ontario?

A carrier based in Ontario needs a Commercial Vehicle Operator's Registration (CVOR) certificate from the Ministry of Transportation. Carriers from other provinces operate on their home province's National Safety Code (NSC) number. Brokers don't need either, so ask who will actually haul the car.

How long does car shipping from Ontario take?

Once the car is picked up, Toronto to Montreal takes 1–2 days on the truck and Toronto to Vancouver takes 6–9 days. Allow another 1–5 days before pickup while the carrier fills its trailer.

Can I ship a car by train in Ontario?

Yes, through a car shipping company that books space on CN or CPKC. Rail terminals used for Ontario: Brampton (Toronto area) (CN); Vaughan (Toronto area) (CPKC). Ask for the company's full legal name and its carrier registration — a National Safety Code (NSC) number, or a CVOR certificate in Ontario — and confirm it with the provincial transport ministry. Check that cargo insurance covers your car's value, get the price and pickup window in writing, and never pay the full amount before pickup.
